Any Cigarette Smoking During Third Trimester of Pregnancy

Measurement Period: 2018-2020
This indicator shows the percent of women who reported any cigarette smoking during their third trimester of pregnancy.

Why is this important?

Any amount of any kind of substance use during pregnancy is unsafe, as the substance can affect the health of the pregnant individual and the fetus when it passes from the pregnant individual's bloodstream to the fetus through the placenta. Alcohol use during pregnancy can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, preterm birth, birth defects, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, and physical, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental delays in the infant. Tobacco use during pregnancy is associated with preterm birth, low birthweight, birth defects, and increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Cannabis use during pregnancy is linked to health concerns related to growth and development of the fetus, and later, cognitive development of the infant. Early, regular and culturally appropriate prenatal care can provide resources for substance use treatment and cessation.
